Event Details

We are a small venue with very limited seating: seats are first-come, first-served. We recommend arriving early. Thanks!

The Humanist Hub is delighted to present our 2017 Harvard Humanist of the Year to Ann Druyan, writer and producer for Cosmos, and outspoken science advocate.

This award, created more than 20 years ago, honors an individual whose life and contributions to society exemplify the values of Humanism: compassion, integrity, creativity, and honesty, among others. Past Harvard Humanists of the Year include entertainers such as Seth MacFarlane and Steve Allen; human rights heroes including Gen. Romeo Dallaire and Taslima Nasreen; and world-renowned scientists such as Steven Pinker and E.O. Wilson.

We at the Humanist Community at Harvard put great consideration into this year’s award, as it is the 40th anniversary of our founding as the first humanist chaplaincy in North American history. We celebrated our 30th anniversary with a large and influential conference; we will be celebrating our 40th throughout the fall semester, hosting a number of very important speakers for critical conversations about the future of humanism.

Given that context, it is with much enthusiasm that we welcome Ann Druyan to accept this award. We deeply admire her vast body of work including both landmark Cosmos series; her commitment to spreading humanist values through popular culture; and her steadfast support of science and reason in civic life.
